The J1 visa is a nonimmigrant visa which allows foreign nationals to enter the U.S. to participate in the Exchange Visitor Program, carried out under the provisions of the Mutual Educational and Cultural Exchange Act of 1961. The purpose of the program is to increase mutual understanding between the people of the United States and the people of other countries by means of educational and cultural exchanges.
The act enables to conduct exchange visitor programs in several exchange visitor program categories. The most popular is summer J-1 visa scheme, known as Summer Work/Travel program. Through the Summer Work /Travel program, foreign students enter the USA to enter into employment for a maximum of four months during their summer vacation.
